By Carolyn Newcomb, District 17 President
I love fall in Colorado. Even though I am writing this in early September, you can feel fall in the air. Fall means lots of opportunities to take long leisurely walks, dine alfresco, and play bridge. I’d like to remind you about some of the great District 17 events planned for this fall.
GNT QualifiersSeptember 1st kicked off the 2012 GNT qualifying games at clubs. Check out the schedule at your favorite club and get qualified with your favorite partners and teammates. The District 17 finals will be held in Denver May 26-28, 2012 at the Rocky Mountain Regional. Participants in the district finals will receive a generous travel allowance when they sign up to play. The winners in each flight will be awarded a $1600 travel allowance per team to attend the National finals in Philadelphia in mid-July.
Usually we rotate the finals between Denver and Las Vegas, but holding the district finals at the Las Vegas Regional would have made it just three weeks before the Nationals next year, so the board decided to hold it in Denver again, which is at the end of May. We will be discussing the rotation and its impact at our board meeting in Phoenix to come up with a long term schedule. E-mail me or your board representative to give us your input in advance of that meeting
Colorado SpringsColorado Springs held the Pikes Peak Shootout August 15-21. The turnout was exceptional, with 1,660 tables in play.
Phoenix Desert Empire Regional and District NAP FinalsReservations are strong for the first October Phoenix Desert Empire Regional in Scottsdale, at the five-star Talking Stick Resort and Casino. The Phoenix Unit is planning a special pro-am event to kick off this tournament. If you are a “pro” (over 2,000 points) or an “am” (under 2,000), let them know if you want to play in this event on Monday afternoon.
The District Finals of the North American Pairs will be in Phoenix on Friday for Flight B and Saturday for Flights A and C. Winners will be awarded travel assistance by the ACBL to attend the finals in Seattle.
NABC Fund Raiser GamesLook for upcoming NABC fundraiser games at your club. From October 3-9. 2011, clubs in District 17 can run a week of NABC fundraiser games to support the Las Vegas 2014 NABC. From October 24-30, 2011, another week of NABC fundraiser games will be held to support the Phoenix 2013 NABC. All the money raised will go to support hospitality at these tournaments. These games will be sectionally rated and pay extra black points. Lesley Davis (firstname.lastname@example.org) is the District 17 coordinator for these events.
