By Darwin Afdahl, District 17 President

As the New Year dawned, our district got off to a rousing start with its first regional: Las Vegas, Nevada. Jane and Bruce Rubin worked hard to get the deeply discounted $69 room rates during the week and just $109 Friday and Saturday at Bally’s Hotel & Casino. The tournament was moved to January this year to make room for the Las Vegas summer NABCs coming in July. The Albuquerque Regional was moved from January to the week of February 24-March 2. Bill Kass, Tournament Chair, and his volunteers have organized what should be another outstanding regional.

For those NLMs with less than 750 masterpoints, Tucson, Arizona is your primo destination February 20-23. This NLM Regional will award 10% GOLD POINTS for all overall awards and section tops in the top flight or strat of two-session or longer pair events and in the top bracket of two-session or longer KO events. This is the first time this regional has offered NLMs the opportunity to earn gold points. Steve Reynolds, Tournament Chair, and his volunteers will provide free coffee/tea, morning treats, and free lectures in addition to the gold points. Room rates are only $59/$69 single/double. (See the January 2014 issue of the D17 ScoreCard for the complete Albuquerque Regional and Tucson NLM Regional Schedules.)

I would like to welcome three new members to the D17 Board of Directors:
