By Carolyn Newcomb, D17 President
When I started helping the Denver Unit Board, they needed a committee to rewrite the bylaws. It was an interesting committee and before I knew it I was on the Unit Board. I served as Hospitality Chairman, Membership Chairman, Partnership Chairman, and Regional Tournament Chairman.
Then I moved onto the District 17 Board, becoming District Treasurer and now President. I have loved my volunteer time. The work has always seemed very fulfilling to me, as have the friendships I have made and the opportunity to learn more about this wonderful organization. I have always served in the best interest of my unit, my district, and my game. Now it is someone else’s turn. I will be retiring at the end of this year. I want to thank all of you for the privilege of serving as your president. It has been my pleasure. Hopefully, I will have some time to spend playing bridge now. I look forward to seeing all of you at the bridge table. < /p>
The Albuquerque Unit is busy preparing for our visit January 21-27, 2013. Plan to make attending our regionals a priority in the new year by making your reservation now at the Albuquerque Marriott Pyramid North by calling 1-800-262-2043. Rates are just $106 a night if you reserve by January 1. Hospitality is always exceptional and I always get my green chile fix while I’m there.
Phoenix continues to have a great turnout, with 2125 tables again this year, awarding nearly 13,500 masterpoints to 1164 players. There were 66 tables in the Pro-Am event on Monday afternoon. The organizers get better and better at running this very popular event.
District 17 Meeting
We had our final District 17 board meeting of the year in Phoenix. Minutes of this meeting are available on http://www.d17acbl.org - the district website. Four new grants of $500 each were awarded to Las Cruces, Boulder, Colorado West, and Northern Colorado. These units do not hold regionals. An additional amount of $3000 was budgeted for next year’s grants. We are struggling with ways to encourage newer players to attend our regional tournaments and would appreciate your ideas.
We are constantly trying to improve the quality of our tournaments and this publication. I love hearing your opinions and perspective. You may contact me through the District website at http://www.d17acbl.org or by emailing me at email@example.com
