Darwinisms Oct 2014
By: Darwin Afdahl, District 17 President
Kay and I attended the delightful District 17 Pikes Peak Regional in Colorado Springs, Colorado, in mid-August. The Tournament Chair, Bonnie Bagley, and her volunteers did an outstanding job. The playing facilities were excellent with plenty of free coffee and candies throughout the tournament.
I am quite concerned over our declining attendance - all D17 regionals held this year have had fewer tables than they did last year. Possible reasons for this include that several of the regionals were held at times different from their usual ones to accommodate the D17 NABCs in 2013 and 2014 (and Denver is upcoming in 2015), that airline ticket prices are increasing, and that the economy is still recovering. I have discussed this disturbing trend with tournament personnel and Gary Zeiger, D17 Director-in-Chief, and they have no specific answers. If anyone has any suggestions how we might improve your enjoyment, please contact me. Remember, D17 regionals are for you, our bridge players, and you are our lifeblood. Your comments - negative or positive - are always welcome.
North American Pairs (NAP)
The D17 NAP finals are coming up in October at the Phoenix Regional, held at the Mesa Convention Center. The top three pairs in each flight are eligible to go to the Spring NABC in New Orleans, Louisiana, in March 2015. The first place pair in each flight will be eligible to receive $700 per player to attend the national finals. The second place winner will be eligible to receive $300 apiece. The third place pair winners will be eligible to receive $200 each. If a qualifying pair chooses not to participate in the National Finals the qualification for that position will be extended to the next ranked qualifiers. Flight C players will play for free at the D17 finals in Phoenix.
Come on out and have some fun. Bridge is a game, and a great game it is.
