Bon’s Mots - November 2016
By Bonnie Bagley, National Board Representative
I cannot believe that another year has gone by and it is already time to announce my selections to the Aileen Osofsky ACBL Goodwill Committee and the ACBL Charity Committee. It bears repeating that while it is such a pleasure to recognize the deserving members of our district, it is also very hard because there are so many outstanding people who deserve to be honored.
All four of the appointments for 2017 (yes, we appoint a year ahead) to the Aileen Osofsky ACBL Goodwill Committee are from Arizona.
Steve Reynolds from Tucson Unit 356 became Board Member and the Tucson Tournament Chair in 2011. He hit the ground running and has not stopped. His goal is to produce the best tournaments possible - and he does just that. His signature hospitality at tournaments is smoked salmon in the mornings. Steve is constantly striving to provide for the players and is thrilled to do so, as shown in the following email which references the Radisson Hotel, the site of the 2017 February Tucson Regional: “Yea, yippee!! The hotel has agreed to the following: If you stay at least Thursday, Friday and Saturday you will get Sunday for FREE!; if you stay for the whole week (from Monday to Saturday) you will get BOTH Sundays FREE! This makes our tournament one of the least expensive, most accommodating and convenient ever.”
Joan Merrillhas been on the Tucson Unit 356 Board since 2010, and has always cheerfully lent a hand to help in any way she could. Joan has a continuous smile on her face and a calm and calming demeanor. She is the epitome of a lady and an example of the adage that still waters run deep.
Adair Karlin has been a dynamo since she joined the Tucson Unit 356 Board in 2007, becoming a board member in 2012 and ascending to the U356 presidency this year. Adair and Joan are bridge partners and travel together to many tournaments. It is always a delight and pleasure to see them, but perhaps not at the bridge table.
Jim Horton is from Mesa Unit 351 and has been on the D17 Board since 2013. Jim has been on the By Laws Committee since joining the board and has been instrumental in helping Robb Gordon revise the D17 Bylaws. Jim has been on the Tournament Coordinating Committee since 2013, took the North American Pairs District Coordinator position in 2015, and is responsible for the NAP ads and the Mesa tournament flyers with their colorful graphics. Jim is one of those persons who might not speak often, but when he does, one should listen.

ACBL is an inaugural partner of the Alzheimer’s Association fund raiser The Longest Day. In 2017 ACBL members, clubs, units, and districts raised $750,000, a fantastic accomplishment. The two appointments for 2017 to the ACBL Charity Committee helped achieve this feat.
James Beattyfrom the Durango, Colorado Bridge Club (Colorado West Unit 364) was the team captain for this small club in southwestern Colorado close to the New Mexico border, which raised $6714 for The Longest Day. This was seventeenth for all ACBL teams and second for D17 teams.
Jo Harriswas the team captain for the Sun City Arizona Bridge Club (Phoenix Unit 354) which was fifteenth ACBL wide and first in D17, raising $8,659. This from a club whose regular game fees are $2.00 . . . amazing!

Thank you Steve, Joan, Adair, Jim, James, and Jo! You are what ACBL is all about and are so deserving of recognition.
I hope to see all of you at the Fall Orlando NABC!
Best Wishes to you and your families for a Happy Thanksgiving and joyful, blessed Holidays surrounded by family, friends, and loved ones.
