Upcoming Regionals

Hope you have made plans to be in beautiful Colorado Springs August 15-21. The Pikes Peak Shootout should be lots of fun for all. The Colorado Springs Unit has made plans to entertain you in style at the Doubletree -World Arena.
It’s not too early to make your reservations to attend the first October Phoenix Desert Empire Regional in Scottsdale at the five-star Talking Stick Resort and Casino.  We are hoping that the long-awaited move of this tournament from summer to fall will encourage you to attend. Your hosts in Phoenix are hard at work planning a winning event.  The District Finals of the North American Pairs will be in Phoenix.

Las Vegas Regional

The Las Vegas Regional has just wrapped up as I am writing this. For the first time in years, Jerry and I played pair games exclusively. We played in the Daylight Pairs, leaving our evenings free to enjoy the sights. The Fast Pairs on Sunday were a treat for me because I play way too fast anyway.  I rediscovered that the great thing about playing in a pair game is that you meet so many nice people.
Attendance was up in Las Vegas this year to 3860 tables, 576 tables higher than last year. This tournament awarded 23,254 masterpoints to 1,864 players. The 0-750 Gold Pairs events had 253 tables over five days, with the highest day being 67 tables. This event seems to be very popular with players. The open pair event for the same days averaged only 26 tables.  Look for more Gold Pairs events in upcoming tournaments in District 17. Time will tell if this event is sustainable, but there appears to be no doubt it contributed to increased attendance in Las Vegas.

NABC Fund Raiser Games

District 17 has three upcoming NABCs: Phoenix in 2013, Las Vegas in 2014 and Denver in 2015. The ACBL allows the local Unit to raise money for hospitality during
the tournaments. One way we can raise money is by holding District wide NABC fundraiser games. Clubs in District 17 can run a week of NABC fundraiser games on October 3-9, 2011 to support the Las Vegas 2014 NABC. Another week of NABC fundraiser games will be held October 24-30, 2011 to support the Phoenix 2013 NABC. All the money raised will go to support hospitality at these tournaments. These games will be sectionally rated and pay extra black points. Look for them at your club. Lesley Davis - lesdavis1@aol.com - is the District 17 coordinator for these events. Thank you, Lesley.
